Between Two Homes: My Journey as a Colombian Woman in Canada
In 2007, I packed my dreams and came to Canada—a country that has since become my second home. Eighteen years later, I can say that living here has been an incredible journey. Canada welcomed me with opportunities, growth, and a sense of belonging that I deeply treasure.
Yet, no matter how many years go by, Colombia will always be my first home. It’s the land where I was born and raised by an amazing family—the Ochoas —who taught me resilience, love, and the importance of carrying my roots proudly. Wherever I go, I always bring Colombia in my heart.
There are little traditions that keep me connected to my culture. For me, nothing compares to starting the morning with warm arepas con queso and a strong Colombian café—a simple but powerful reminder of my paisa heritage.
Today, I embrace being both Colombian and Canadian. I am grateful for the richness of having two homes, two cultures, and a heart that will forever beat with the rhythm of Colombia, even while thriving in Canada.
